The next time you go to the store and looking for a dental product, don’t be puzzled as you scan the row upon row of products to choose from. You may wonder how you can know which product can be trusted, especially when truth in advertising is not always truthful. Thank goodness for the ADA (American Dental Association) Seal of Acceptance, which helps consumers know which oral health products actually do what they claim to do. More than 300 dental products have been researched by the ADA, including toothbrushes, mouthwashes, denture products, and even chewing gum. These products carrying the Seal of Acceptance have been rigorously tested and found to be safe and effective for the public to use.
This patient-centered, science-based and ethically-driven association has done extensive research on all products carrying its Seal of Acceptance. Its code of ethics for the dentists who belong to the ADA is that they 1) promise to do no harm, 2) always do good and 3) to treat patients fairly and honestly. It sets the standard for how dental products and technologies should be defined, how they should perform, and how these products and technologies should work together.
As the developer of dental standards in the U.S. the ADA also participates in international standards development. ADA standards are so high that their companies are often asked to meet standards higher than what the law requires. As a non-profit organization, the ADA’s job is to scientifically evaluate the products submitted, so that not only are they proven safe to use, but effective as well, so consumers can know that the advertising really is truthful. And finally, the ADA receives no payment for their endorsements.
Now that you know to look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on all your oral health products, you can shop with renewed confidence when looking for products to help preserve you and your family’s precious smile.
